Travelling by land with your dog
The requirements depend on the country you're going to, not the vehicle. These are the most common situations when leaving Spain.
Within the European Union
Your dog must travel with its owner, be microchipped, have a valid rabies vaccination and carry an EU pet passport. See the steps in Documents.
Countries with the same conditions as the EU
According to Spain's Ministry of Agriculture, for Andorra, Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, the Vatican, the Faroe Islands, Gibraltar and Greenland, meeting the same conditions as for an EU country is enough.
Other countries
You must meet each country's requirements, which may include blood tests, official certificates or quarantine. Ask the destination country's embassy or consulate in Spain well in advance.
Returning to Spain
From an EU country, the same conditions apply as on the way out. If you're returning from a country with a rabies risk, your dog must also have had an antibody test at an approved laboratory before the trip, and the timeframes are long. Pets arriving from outside the EU must enter through designated travellers' points of entry.
To or from the United Kingdom
Pet passports issued in Great Britain are no longer valid for entering the EU: you need an animal health certificate for each trip. Check the current conditions on the UK Government website before booking.
